La méthode Pape Thiaw

L’ancien international sénégalais vient de franchir un nouveau palier dans sa carrière d’entraîneur. Après la sélection locale, Pape Bouna Thiaw s’apprête à diriger son premier match en tant que titulaire sur le banc de l’équipe nationale A. Face au Malawi, ce vendredi (11 octobre), les Sénégalais verront une autre méthode bien connue à Niarry Tally et dans la Tanière des Lions locaux.

Agressivité, exigence, sérieux, beau jeu et pressing haut sont les maitres-mots de la méthode Pape Thiaw, nommé sélectionneur intérimaire de l’équipe nationale A du Sénégal. Celui qui a pris la place d’Aliou Cissé sur le banc des Lions veut marquer les esprits et frapper un grand coup pour sa première sortie face au Malawi, ce vendredi 11 octobre au stade Abdoulaye Wade de Diamniadio.

« S’il applique ce qu’il faisait avec nous durant le CHAN, j’en suis sûr qu’il va impressionner face au Malawi. On verra une autre équipe du Sénégal », rassure Pape Abdoulaye Dieng, un des gardiens sénégalais, vainqueur du CHAN 2023 en Algérie.

Nommé sélectionneur de l’équipe nationale locale du Sénégal en 2021, il a vite imposé sa patte. Thiaw a réussi à inventer la  bonne formule à travers une méthode qui a séduit dans la Tanière lors du CHAN 2023.

« Pape Thiaw, c’est avant tout quelqu’un qui aime ce qu’il fait. C’est un entraîneur qui est toujours fidèle à ses principes. Avec lui, tu as toujours envie de bien faire. A travers son discours, il permet aux joueurs de bien s’exprimer sur le terrain. Il a un style de jeu tourné vers l’avant. Il a un bon projet de jeu qui peut faire du bien à l’équipe nationale A du Sénégal. Avec lui, on avait une équipe joueuse, agressive, du pressing haut », décortique l’ancien gardien du Dakar Sacré-Cœur qui a récemment signé à la Linguère de Saint-Louis.

Son premier capitaine en équipe nationale locale ne dira pas le contraire. Pour Moutarou Baldé, Pape Thiaw est un entraîneur qui « ose, il est ambitieux. C’est quelqu’un qui ne parle pas beaucoup. Il a du caractère », a témoigné le champion du Sénégal 2021 avec Teungueth FC.

« Quand il a pris la tête de l’équipe nationale locale du Sénégal, son premier discours a été de remobiliser tout le monde. Quand il avait dit qu’il était venu pour gagner le CHAN, certains ne le prenaient pas au sérieux. Après quelques semaines, on a compris par la suite que c’était lui l’homme de la situation. Il nous disait tout le temps de croire en nous, de nous faire comprendre que rien n’est impossible en football », ajoute Moutarou qui évoluait la saison dernière au Ndiambour de Louga.

« Ses entraînements sont intenses, il aime les joueurs agressifs »

Un des hommes de confiance de Pape Thiaw durant le Championnat d’Afrique des Nations, Moutarou Baldé nous plonge au cœur de son discours et sa méthode.

« Ses entraînements sont intenses. Il aime les joueurs agressifs. Il ne badine pas avec les pertes de balle et quand ça arrive, il fait tout pour qu’on récupère le ballon le plus rapidement possible. Il avait l’habitude de nous imposer cela. Ce qui fait que l’équipe était soudée. Coach Pape Thiaw, c’est aussi un adepte du beau jeu ».

Ancien international sénégalais, celui qui a porté le maillot du Sénégal à onze reprises a connu plusieurs clubs en Europe comme Saint-Etienne, Metz, Strasbourg, Dynamo Moscou, Lausanne-Sport ou encore Alavés.

A Niarry Tally, « il était exigeant dans la performance »

Après avoir raccroché les crampons en 2014, il a passé ses diplômes d’entraîneur. Il est aujourd’hui titulaire d’un diplôme UEFA-A. Sa première expérience sur un banc, c’était avec Niarry Tally. Arrivé à NGB en décembre 2018 en remplacement d’Abatalib Fall, il avait réussi à maintenir le club à l’issue de l’exercice.

« Quand il est arrivé à Niarry Tally, on était avant-dernier au classement de Ligue 1. Derrière, il a réussi à redresser jusqu’à obtenir le maintien en fin de saison. Il avait connu une longue série d’invincibilité », se rappelle Maguette Ndiaye, gardien de NGB à l’époque.

« Il était exigeant dans la performance avec nous durant son passage à Niarry Tally. C’est quelqu’un qui aime le beau jeu, il rassure ses joueurs à travers son discours, il te met en confiance », explique l’actuel gardien de l’US Créteil en France.

La première sortie de Pape Bouna Thiaw à la tête de l’équipe nationale A du Sénégal face au Malawi ce vendredi sera scrutée de très près. Une victoire avec la manière dissiperait les doutes autour de sa nomination. A lui de jouer !
