Il est de loin le meilleur buteur sénégalais à l’étranger cette saison, même s’il évolue en deuxième division saoudienne. Mbaye Diagne, c’est en moyenne 15 buts par saison depuis 2019. Pourtant, il n’a jamais fait l’unanimité en équipe nationale.
Décryptage
« Je ne suis ni Messi ni Ronaldo, mais j’ai le sens du but ». Cette petite phrase résume les qualités de Mbaye Diagne. Il n’est pas le plus technique de sa génération ni le plus doué avec le ballon, mais quand ça demande de marquer, il ne tremble pas. Surtout quand c’est dans la surface.
« Tout le monde connaît ses qualités de grand buteur et sa carrière parle pour lui-même. C’est un renard des surfaces, un finisseur. La preuve, 90% de ses buts ont été marqués dans la surface », analyse Vieux Ba, ancien coach du Stade de Mbour et Mbour PC.
Déjà 21 buts en 30 matchs en Arabie saoudite
Annoncé proche de la retraite à la fin de son aventure avec Karagumruk l’été dernier, Mbaye Diagne avait ensuite choisi une destination inattendue. Au moment où certaines stars mondiales ralliait la Saudi Pro League, à l’image de Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Riyad Mahrez, Karim Benzema ou encore Ngolo Kanté, Mbaye Diagne, a préféré rejoindre la D2 pour un nouveau challenge.
Avec Al-Qadsiah, un club basé dans la ville de Khobar, dans la province orientale du Royaume d’Arabie saoudite, Diagne avait « juré » de faire monter l’équipe en première division. Le tout en échange de 5 milliards FCFA par an.
Quelques mois après, revoilà Mbaye Diagne qui a tenu promesse. Véritable terreur des défenses adverses, l’attaquant de 32 ans et son équipe ont survolé la Saudi First Division League. En 30 matchs, il a marqué 21 buts. Son doublé du lundi dernier contre Ohod Club (2-2) a validé la montée d’Al-Qadsiah.
143 buts en 243 matchs en pro
La saison prochaine, il croisera certainement la route de ses compatriotes (Mendy, Sadio, Koulibaly, Habib).
En effet, depuis qu’il a explosé avec le club turc de Kasimpasa lors de la saison 2018-2019, Mbaye Diagne se retrouve en moyenne autour de 15 réalisations par exercice. Avec la modeste équipe d’Istanbul, Diagne avait dépassé la barre des 30 buts.
Toujours dans cette grande ville turque, cette fois-ci à Galatasaray, l’un des plus grands clubs du pays, l’international sénégalais a réussi a planté 26 pions en 62 rencontres. Pourtant, il n’était pas le choix n°1 de Fatih Terim en attaque à l’époque.
Avec Karagumruk la saison dernière sous les ordres d’Andrea Pirlo, il a encore réussi une saison de malade en inscrivant 25 buts en 35 matchs.
Egalement passé par Hongrie (Újpest, 11 buts), Chine (TJ Teda, 15 buts), Belgique (Bruges, Westerlo, Lierse, 14 buts) et Angleterre (West Brom, 3 buts en 16 matchs), Mbaye Diagne a inscrit un total de 143 buts en 243 matchs.
En Turquie, il a marqué l’histoire en étant le meilleur buteur sénégalais de la Super Lig (76 buts) et dans le top 10 des meilleurs attaquants étrangers de l’histoire de ce championnat (8e position).
Vieux Bâ : « Pourquoi Mbaye n’a pas réussi en équipe nationale… »
Brillant en club partout où il est passé, Mbaye Diagne aurait pu réussir une grande carrière internationale, mais ses qualités n’ont jamais été « en phase avec le jeu proposé en équipe nationale où en six matchs il n’a marqué aucun but. Ce n’est pas un joueur qui pèse dans le jeu. Sa zone de prédilection reste la surface de réparation pour l’aboutissement et la finition des attaques », a décrypté Vieux Bâ.
« Si on creuse davantage, on verra que ce n’est pas un joueur qui a excellé dans de grands clubs, sauf Galatasasay. Mais, est-ce que cela suffit pour rejoindre une sélection nationale et entrer dans le projet de jeu de l’entraîneur? », s’interroge le technicien.
« Au Sénégal, en attaque, on a l’habitude de voir des buts en solo, ça manque de construction ou des attaques rapides. Sur ce, c’était difficile pour Mbaye de s’imposer. Il est fort dans le jeu direct. C’est un joueur qui marque beaucoup plus de la tête ou sur penaltys ».
Vice champion d’Afrique 2019, l’attaquant de 32 ans n’a plus été appelé en équipe nationale depuis mars 2021. Son apparition face à Eswatini (1-1) à Thiès risque d’être la dernière sous le maillot de l’équipe nationale du Sénégal.
