Titulaire en début de saison, l’ancien des Girondins de Bordeaux avait malheureusement été touché au mollet en sélection face à l’Algérie, le 12 septembre 2023 (0-1) au stade Abdoulaye Wade de Diamniadio.
Obligé de quitter ses partenaires avant même la fin de la partie, alors qu’il réalisait un match énorme face aux Fennecs de Djamel Belmadi, Youssouf Sabaly était retourné en Espagne pour se soigner. Il est resté à l’infirmerie pendant près de cinq mois avant de retrouver la compétition. Sa dernière apparition avec Betis remontait au 27 août 2023 en championnat.
Malgré cette blessure, il avait été retenu par Aliou Cissé pour disputer la 34e édition de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations en Côte d’Ivoire. Mais il n’a pas réussi à disputer la moindre minute avec les Lions, éliminés en 8es de finale par le pays hôte (1-1, TA 5-4).
De nouveau disponible, l’international sénégalais de 30 ans devrait être opérationnel en mars pour un match amical face au Gabon (reste à confirmer).
