Le Sénégal reste sur une série de 18 matchs de compétition sans défaite ! En fait, les Lions n’ont plus perdu depuis la défaite à domicile (0-1) face à l’Algérie, le 12 septembre 2023.
C’est peut-être la consolation après son match nul (0-0) face au Soudan, ce samedi, en qualifications du Mondial 2026 : le Sénégal prolonge son invincibilité à 18 matchs. C’est à une victoire ou un match nul près du précédent record, entre novembre 2020 et mars 2022, arrêté à 19 matchs sans défaite après le revers (1-0) face à l’Égypte, sur la route du Mondial qatari. On fera les comptes après Sénégal – Togo, ce 25 mars, à Dakar.
La nouvelle série sénégalaise commence le 16 octobre 2023, à l’occasion d’un succès (1-0) contre le Cameroun, à Lens. Depuis, les Lions ont disputé les éliminatoires de la Coupe du monde 2026, la dernière CAN en Côte d’Ivoire, des rencontres amicales et les qualifications à la grand-messe continentale prévue au Maroc (du 21 décembre 2025 au 18 janvier 2026). La bande à Sadio Mané a ainsi enregistré 13 victoires et 5 matchs nuls pour 29 buts inscrits et 3 encaissés, mais aussi…14 clean-sheets !
Deuxième plus longue série des Lions
Déjà en 2024, le Sénégal était la seule sélection africaine invaincue puisque l’élimination en huitième de finale de la Coupe d’Afrique 2023 par la Côte d’Ivoire, aux tirs au but (1-1, TAB 4-5), compte pour un match nul. Comme c’était le cas pour la troisième marque qui comprenait aussi une élimination similaire en quart de finale de la Coupe d’Afrique 2017 par le Cameroun (0-0, TAB 4-5). L’invincibilité des Lions sous la houlette d’Aliou Cissé, établie entre janvier 2017 et juin 2018, était alors arrêtée à 17 matchs après le revers face à la Croatie (2-1), en amical préparatoire au Mondial russe.
Mais, si on déduisait le match amical face aux Fennecs, le dernier revers des Lions remonterait à une autre élimination en huitièmes de finale, mais celle-là au Mondial, (0-3) contre l’Angleterre, le 04 décembre 2022, au Qatar. Ce qui ajouterait à la série en cours les succès contre le Mozambique (5-1, 0-1) et le Brésil (2-4), ainsi que les matchs nuls contre le Togo et le Bénin, sur le même score (1-1).
À noter que l’Algérie détient le record africain avec 35 matchs consécutifs sans défaite, entre octobre 2018 et janvier 2022.
