12 victoires, 26 marqués, 35 joueurs utilisés : Le bilan des Lions en 2024

Le Sénégal a bouclé, ce mardi 19 novembre, une année 2024 marquée par l’élimination en 8e de finale de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations par la Côte d’Ivoire. Après un an de compétition internationale, l’heure est au bilan.

De l’élimination en 8e de finale de la CAN à la nomination de Pape Thiaw comme sélectionneur intérimaire, en passant par le départ d’Aliou Cissé. L’équipe nationale du Sénégal a vécu une année mouvementée.

15 matchs, 12 victoires, 3 nuls

Tout a démarré le 8 janvier 2024. Sur la route de Yamoussoukro, le Sénégal avait disputé un match amical à Diamniadio. Une manière de communier avec le public avant de s’envoler pour la CAN. Mais le dernier test à domicile était loin d’être rassurant. Face au Niger, les Lions ont longtemps douté avant de s’imposer dans les arrêts de jeu, grâce à Formose Mendy (90’+9).

Arrivé en Côte d’Ivoire dans la peau de champion en titre, le Sénégal a vite chassé les doutes en réalisant un premier tour record : 3 matchs, autant de succès contre la Gambie (3-0), le Cameroun (3-1) et la Guinée (2-0). Le tout pour 8 buts marqués et un seul encaissé.

Sortis premier de leur poule devant les Lions indomptables et le Syli national, les coéquipiers de Sadio Mané ont été surpris par le pays hôte (1-1, TAB 4-5) qui revenait de l’enfer.

Quelques semaines après le fiasco de Yakro, le Sénégal avait choisi Amiens pour se rassurer en amical. Mais les deux victoires contre le Gabon (3-0) et le Bénin (1-0) n’ont pas réglé grand-chose. De retour à Diamniadio, ils avaient déçu contre la RD Congo (1-1). Le nul à domicile contre le Burkina Faso (1-1) et le succès presque inespéré à Lilongwe contre le Burundi (1-0) ont emporté Aliou Cissé. Il laissera la place à son adjoint Pape Thiaw.

Le vainqueur du dernier CHAN a démarré par une victoire convaincante face au Malawi (4-0). S’en suivront deux autres succès avant de terminer l’année en beauté contre le Burundi (2-0). En 15 matchs en 2024, c’est 12 victoires et 3 nuls.

26 buts marqués, 4 encaissés

Malgré une CAN ratée en Côte d’Ivoire, les Lions ont vécu une année presque parfaite sur le plan comptable avec 26 buts marqués et seulement 4 encaissés en 15 rencontres. Formose a ouvert le compteur sénégalais. Habib Diarra a terminé le travail.

Seuls quatre joueurs ont réussi à tromper la vigilance du gardien Édouard Mendy qui aura bouclé l’année avec un total de 7 clean-sheets en 10 matchs. Il s’agit de Jean Charles Castelletto (Cameroun), Franck Kessié (Côte d’Ivoire), Fiston Mayele (RD Congo) et Ousseni Bouda (Burkina Faso).

Koulibaly le plus utilisé, Sadio le plus efficace

Capitane des Lions, Kalidou Koulibaly a été le joueur le plus régulier durant toute l’année. Le défenseur central de 33 ans n’a raté qu’un seul match : c’était contre le Gabon (3-0) en amical à Amiens. Il avait laissé la place à Seydou Sano qui avait évolué aux côté d’Abdoulaye Seck. Au total, Koulibaly a disputé 14 matchs (1146 minutes).

Kalidou est suivi par Sadio Mané (12 matchs, 1016 minutes) qui a pourtant raté trois matchs (contre Niger, RD Congo et Mauritanie). L’ancien attaquant de Liverpool est en tête au classement des Lions les plus efficaces avec 6 buts, 3 passes décisives et un penalty provoqué.

3 buts en 9 matchs : la révélation Habib Diarra

Sur les 35 joueurs utilisés, seuls 5 Lions n’ont connu qu’une seule apparition. Il s’agit de Seydou Sano, Mikayil Ngor Faye, Amara Diouf, Rassoul Ndiaye, Fodé Ballo-Touré, Abdoulaye Niakhaté Ndiaye.

L’un des derniers à rejoindre la Tanière, Habib Diarra a été la révélation de l’année. En 9 matchs, le capitaine de Strasbourg a réussi à inscrire 3 buts. En termes de ratio, le milieu de terrain de 20 ans fait déjà mieux que certains attaquants comme Nicolas Jackson (1 but en 18 sélections).
