En deux jours et à des milliers de kilomètres, ces deux évènements traduisent à suffisance que le football a beau être un jeu (« qui rapporte gros », avait pris soin d’ajouter un esprit malicieux), il est bien trop sérieux pour être laissé aux seuls footballeurs et à leurs encadreurs techniques et administratifs. Ce n’est pas pour rien qu’au sortir de ces agapes, le bruit a couru que le joueur n’avait pas donné d’accord ferme au Real Madrid. Le PSG (l’équipe de France dont il est le capitaine, plus généralement) aimerait bien garder sa tête de gondole et aucun renfort même politique n’est de trop – aucun chèque trop gros – pour la convaincre de rester. Et « le premier sportif du Cameroun » va entrer en jeu pour lui trouver un successeur à la mesure du pedigree des « Lions indomptables » et du prestige du pays.

Car, c’est de cela qu’il s’agit. Le sport – le football en particulier – est devenu l’un des lieux où le nationalisme et le patriotisme s’affirment avec une passion de plus en plus grande. Au risque parfois de tomber dans un chauvinisme de mauvais aloi. Mais, bien compris, il est un ferment pour l’unité, la cohésion et la paix sociales. Comme cela a été administré il y a quelques jours en Côte d’Ivoire, lors de la fantastique remontée en apnée des « Eléphants » vers le titre continental.

C’est que là aussi, on avait fait de cette CAN une question de fierté nationale, avec des moyens colossaux déployés et, au fil de la compétition, une affaire de prestige qui a rallié les Ivoiriens de tous bords. Désormais, aucun pays ne veut être largué. Tant mieux pour le football continental, aussi longtemps que certains ne débarqueront pas avec leurs gros sabots sur des espaces où ils n’ont rien à faire…
