Après quatre succès de suite durant son intérim, Pape Thiaw a connu son premier accroc avec les Lions lors de son premier grand oral en tant que coach principal en partageant les points avec le Soudan samedi à Benghazi (0-0). Un autre match sans victoire ce mardi soir à Diamniadio face au Togo dans le cadre de la 6e journée des qualifications au Mondial 2026 fragiliserait un peu (voire beaucoup) le technicien sénégalais. Et surtout le rêve américain pour les Lions se transformerait en cauchemar.

L’Amérique est encore loin pour les Lions. Conséquence : Aliou Cissé, maitre à bord depuis 2015, qui avait, jusque-là montré, et ce malgré les turbulences, sa connaissance de la carte aéronautique qui mène à toutes les compétitions, a été débarqué.

Pape, assistant pilote de Cissé, a désormais les commandes. Il a déjà redressé la barre et mené à bon port l’équipe à Maroc 2025. Il doit maintenant réaliser le rêve américain. Le décollage est laborieux avec ce nul sans inspiration contre le Soudan (0-0) même s’il faut reconnaitre que survoler Benghazi n’est jamais facile.

Togo, triangle des Bermudes ?

Le trajet aller bouclé avec un léger retard (3e du classement), il n’est donc plus permis de tourner en rond. Ce mardi soir à Diamniadio face au Togo, il faut absolument réenclencher la machine victorieuse. Réussir un nouveau départ et prendre un raccourci pour dépasser le Soudan (11 pts) et la RD Congo (10 pts). Avec neuf points au compteur pour le Sénégal, Soudanais et Congolais sont encore à portée de vue. Pape est, en tout cas, pressé de se repositionner. « Pourquoi pas gagner les 5 prochains, c’est possible » a-t-il confié en conférence de presse de veille de match ce lundi.

Les Togolais (4 pts) malgré leurs difficultés dans cette poule (0 victoire) et en perdition depuis presque 10 ans (4 CAN d’affilée ratées), entendent une nouvelle fois être le cauchemar des Sénégalais. D’ailleurs les fans des Lions les plus pessimistes estiment que ce n’est jamais un bon signe de passer par Lomé sur la route d’un Mondial. C’est le Triangle des Bermudes pour les Lions du Sénégal. Seul Cissé a su percer son mystère pour se rendre au Qatar en 2022 (victoire 2-0 à Thiès en 2021).

Préoccupé à dompter d’autres Lions ce soir avec ses Chevaliers du désert, El Tactico n’aura certainement pas le temps de confier ses secrets à son successeur. Mais pas grave, Sadio Mané et Abdou Diallo qui avaient déplumés les Eperviers, il y a quatre ans à Lat-Dior sont encore là. A eux de redonner des ailes à ce groupe. Pour réenclencher la machine victorieuse et éviter la sortie.
