Cela fait cinq ans qu’il nous a quitté. Sa mort n’est pas passée inaperçue car il a été la première victime de la Covid-19 au Sénégal. Et comme tous les grands hommes qui ont marqué leur passage sur terre, la nouvelle de la mort de Pape Diouf a plongé tout un pays dans la consternation, endeuillé tout un continent et bouleversé la France et l’Europe.
Un sentiment de tristesse générale lié à la dimension de l’homme que le football a révélé et à qui le journalisme a donné la renommée et le respect. Deux facettes qui ont fondé son leadership, son charisme qui ont été les ressorts de ses qualités managériales dans la gestion des hommes dans un milieu aussi complexe et passionné que celui du football.
L’Afrique le revendiquant et l’Europe s’y accrochait. Le football, c’était sa passion et sa boussole à la fois. Mais en ce 31 Mars, le calendrier coche pour moi une date triste, un marqueur noir dans ma carrière et ma vie tout court. Celle de la fin d’une relation très forte, celle qui a brisé mon aile protectrice et l’effondrement du pylône qui jouait le rôle de support de ma vie.
Pape m’a détecté, m’a forgé, m’a façonné et a fixé toutes les rampes de ma carrière professionnelle. Un PDF du journal “Stades” que je lui faisais parvenir chaque jour à Marseille a suffi à ce talentueux journaliste de jeter les bases de liens forts basés sur l’estime, le respect et la confiance jusqu’à sa mort. Il avait perçu dans mes écrits à travers ce quotidien sportif, ce que moi-même j’ignorais. C’est ainsi qu’en pleine CAN 2010 en Angola, il me fit la proposition d’une bourse dans son école de journalisme qu’il venait de créer à Marseille.
À son retour, il joint l’acte à la parole et je me retrouve à l’Institut Européen de Journalisme (IEJ) à Marseille pour deux ans. La fin de ma formation à Marseille a constitué le début d’un long compagnonnage fait de conseils, de veille constante sur mon métier, de rectification permanente. Pape Diouf a été plus qu’un mentor pour moi.
Avec lui, j’étais sûr d’être à l’abri de l’erreur, loin de ces fautes qui perdent les jeunes journalistes sur les difficiles routes du métier. Il était omniprésent sans être encombrant. Il était rigoureux mais pas méchant et son côté protecteur me rassurait et me motivait mais la peur de le décevoir était constante en moi. L’homme était un père aux qualités humaines très grandes, un exemple.
Avec Pape Diouf, j’ai découvert les ficelles du métier de journaliste grâce à sa générosité et son sens de la perfection. C’est avec plaisir que j’ai parcouru la région de Marseille lors de la promotion de son excellent ouvrage “C’est bien plus qu’un jeu”. Des moments de joie et de fierté aux côtés de ce grand journaliste doublé d’un grand dirigeant sportif.
En mars 2020, j’ai chopé le Corona virus. Pendant mon hospitalisation, mes premiers et derniers textos de la journée étaient de Pape Diouf. Il me donnait la force de résister et le courage d’affronter l’épreuve. Grande fut ma surprise quand il m’appela un 26 Mars pour m’informer qu’il l’avait lui aussi chopé. Comme une communauté de destin même dans la maladie. Il pensait pouvoir me retrouver lui aussi à Diamniadio ou j’étais interné afin qu’on se voit pour échanger. La marque de ces grand hommes fidèles en relations même dans des moments difficiles.
Dieu en a décidé autrement au soir du 31 Mars la triste nouvelle tomba. Pape Diouf s’en est allé. Le voyage éternel auquel aucun être humain n’échappe. La Covid 19 a eu raison de l’homme que je n’oublierai jamais. Son ombre planera sur ma vie et ses mots résonneront toujours dans les oreilles. Repose en paix.
